I Don't Like Mondays Either, But ...

On January 29, 1979, a Monday, sixteen year old Brenda Ann Spencer wounded eight children and one police officer and killed the Principal and Head Custodian in a shooting spree at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California.

According to wikipedia:

When the six-hour incident ended and the sixteen-year-old was asked why she had committed the crime, she shrugged and replied, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." She also said: "I had no reason for it, and it was just a lot of fun," "It was just like shooting ducks in a pond," and "(The children) looked like a herd of cows standing around, it was really easy pickings."

Spencer's crime, lack of remorse, and inability to provide a serious explanation for her actions when captured inspired the song "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats, written by musician Bob Geldof.

The lyrics of this chilling song may be accessed here.

I don't like Mondays either. But I find productive ways of dealing with it.

By the way, Have You Seen This Man?

i wonder what it feels like shooting people, though? killing in general. not that i will, but i'm just curious. maybe Brenda felt the same and simply took the curiosity one notch higher...

also, good thing guns are expensive here in the Philippines. else we'd have more news like this. shoot, even John Ducat had fake ammos.

Most of us do find ways, or are taught ways to cope. The sad few who do not create tragedies such as this.

i used not to like Mondays, too. but since i took early retirement, it doesn't matter anymore.

i remember a former officemate, each monday, he would say "thank God it's monday, 4 more days to go and it will be friday". think about positivism!

That girl sounds like a psychopath.

The amount of crime and violence on American TV is shocking, but there are so many damaged people in real life. Art imitates life.

I wonder why these shootings happen at schools and colleges. You never hear about a grocery store shooting or a bus shooting (and I hope we won't).

Liz, I would imagine it would be quite exhilarating, for a few moments. But then it should suck for the rest of your life. I suppose that's why they often take their life soon afterwards.

Maybe because the killers know that nobody will have a weapon. It's funny how there is NEVER any such shootings at a gun club...

Nice blog, btw, I am linking.

Thanks, Sonia. I'm kind of afraid that we will see more of this at shopping malls, though.

And thanks for the link. I have linked back to you on my blogs as well.
